For the Polynesian Maori, ancestor of today's Tahitians, Raiatea was known as Sacred Havai'i and was the center of royalty, religion, culture and history. From here the great war canoes set out for Hawaii and New Zealand to colonize new shores.

Raiatea does not have beaches, however, there is an island close by boat where you can go with a nice beach and have a picnic. At the top of the island is Taha'a with beautiful white sand beaches.
