LEGEND “Nananu-I-Ra” – Once upon a time, Adi lived in the village of Nanukuloa (Village of the Black Sands) on Viti Levu. She fell
in love with a handsome young chief from Bua, about 20 miles
across the water and famous for its forests of beautiful sandalwood.
Unfortunately the tribes on Bua and on Viti Levu were not friendly,
and the suit of the young chieftain was rejected by Adi’s father, chief
Nanukuloa. Undaunted, the two young lovers met secretly on
an island which came to be known as Nananu-I-Ra, meaning “Dreamland in the West.”
